Spring City Plein Air Show

Oh, wa! ha! ha! What a day! Laura and Marie were not able to make it this year. I pick Kathryn up in Milburn and was very impressed with her new house in progress. Hal thought about coming with us but in the end he stayed there to work and it was just Kathryn and me.

We first went to the Plein Air exhibit. About 50 artists participated including Linda Christensen, Sean Diediker (who we just missed seeing) and Aaron Bushnell, who we talked to with his girlfriend Pam. There were some wonderful paintings as usual. Some of our favorites were painted by Samuel Burt and were priced at $211.20, (with nice frames!).

We missed out on the food as it was gone when we tried to get some. We next went to Joe Bennion's, as Kathryn wanted to buy a new piece of pottery from him. He was very attentive as he talked to her about going to BYU and how to get a river rafting permit. I thought it would be cool to get a picture of the two of them as this was her first time meeting him. We had to fetch a bit more money to cover taxes and when she went to pay him, he was rivited in conversation with someone else and this was the picture I got. Oh well, something to laugh about.

As we came out of the pottery shop we saw a cool horse drawn wagon. I grabbed my camera to take a photo. Just then Kathryn said, "Look, they're running now!" So, this is the photo I got. The neat thing is the house in the background is Ella Peacock's. She was an artist who painted in Sanpete County and died at age 94 in Spring in 1999.

After that the camera stayed in the car. We really had some fun experiences anyway. If one place wasn't open to us, we found something else equally interesting. We saw some unique chickens and plants. We heard the history of a number of old buildings from people who would know. We saw the cutest guest house that was built from the stones from the old Zion's Co-op which burned down in Fairview. And, we collected many seeds from some beautiful Hollyhocks.

We ended up having a great time and on the way home stopped in Moroni to get a turkey sandwich. The fries were fresh and crispy and so delicious that we got full from the fries and took our sandwiches on the road. It was of course a beautiful ride home, which was just the rejuvenation I needed.

Great Things Come In Small Packages

Marie and Kathryn both had two paintings in the show at Terra Nova! Kathryn was in Washington D.C. on an art trip and couldn't make the opening. So, we did the next best thing. We stood next to her paintings!

Terra Nova Gallery Opening

Kathryn and I entered the Provo Plein Air event, a first for both of us. There were some great paintings.

Down By the Boat Harbor

I went down by the boat harbor near the place Marie and I painted before. This place has good lighting in the evening. I'll scout Rock Canyon and maybe a little Provo Canyon on Tuesday.

Plein Air Painting - Midway

Marie went to Thanksgiving Point yesterday and got warmed up painting a nice little scene. We scouted around a bit and found this place in Midway. It seems that there are little spots maintained by the state for fishermen to use by the Provo river. They have restroom facilities and are perfect for our purposes.

We determined that we prefer to paint with few onlookers as we are a bit insecure about our abilities at this point. The teacher in Marie comes out as she doesn't mind telling people about what she is doing....I am mortified when they look at my painting.

We had a nice time and were happy we went. We are hoping to have many more excursions this spring and summer (and fall). Hopefully we will have more painters join us.
